The Procession of Virgins at Sant'Apollinare Nuovo: Detail, Saints Pelagia and Euphemia

The Procession of Virgins goes the length of the left wall of the nave, just above the columns. Each virgin saint carries her martyr's crown to present to the Virgin and Child enthroned at the east end of the mosaic. St. Euphemia of Chalcedon is the first of the virgins in the procession. Deliyannis (168) suggests this is because it was the Council of Chalcedon (A.D. 451) that condemned Arianism.
